Pomp & Circumstance

Princess Anne is in town.

For some reason this has caused HUGE debate on the CBC website- apparently there are many who believe the Royals should be outlawed.  That is fine - I respect YOUR opinion- but what dismays ME is that people have lost focus of the REASON she has ventured to Newfoundland. Their "politcal opinions" have overshadowed the real reason for the visit - which is very sad.

You see Princess Anne is the Commander in Chief of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, and this is the the anniversary of Gallipoli.  She was invited to present the Regiment with their new Battle Honors - an honor that quite frankly in my humble opinion merits a visit from the Commander in Chief of the regiment.

Many people are angry she was invited- but I am not.  This was not just an ordinary Royal visit- Princess Anne did not do much of what Royals "do" on official visits.  This was all about the RNR.

If you want to get into semantics the RNR did not fight for Canada anyway- Newfoundland did not join in Confederation until 1949- well AFTER the second World Was.  In the Great war the RNR fought for Britian....therefore a visit from the Royal CIC of the regiment is very appropriate.

The official parade was yesterday at Mile One.  I did not go ( I had to work ) but Steve took the kids.  They all said it was amazing.  The RNR band was amazing, the ceremony awesome ( in the true sense of the word).  Today I took the kids to watch as she laid a wreath at the Caribou monument in Bowring Park and met some "modern veterans" ( people who have served since 1990).  My husband was one of those vets, having gone to Bosnia in the 1990's. I am very roud of him.  He was able to meet her- and had avery brief conversation with her.  He said she was very relaxed and nice- not the stiff formality you would expect.

It was all very low key, completely military orchestrated and well done.

No matter who the Commander in Chief of the RNR was- it was an amazing invitation and done well.  I think that the RNR should be proud, and that Princess Anne is a dignified and proud Commander in Chief.

Kudos to the RNR for a great show both today and yesterday.

By the way Erin was more impressed that Princess Anne is an Olympian in horse jumping ( 1976 - Montreal)  than a real life Princess!!
